Derived character : ウィキペディア英語版 | Derived character
A derived character is a character that is derived from a more primitive character over evolutionary history. Characters, such as derived characters, are used throughout cladistics. This analysis compares characters to determine phylogenetic relationships, but there are many controversies regarding whether certain characters are informative. It is important to choose the correct characteristics to develop the most accurate tree as possible, since even human evolution is hypothesized through the use of character evolution. Derived characters are of particular importance in relation to synapomorphy, which are often used in tandem maximum parsimony-based phylogenetic reconstruction. The various schemes used to calculate the lowest-scoring trees involved inference from the derived character states shared by taxa. The derived characters used in conjunction with shared traits can indirectly determine where the root of phylogenetic trees are, for example, based on which taxa share the derived characteristic. Stechmann and Cavalier-Smith used derived traits to determine that the root of the eukaryotic tree cannot lie within groups with the fusion gene, since it arose in their common ancestors; thus, derived traits show where lineages splits and where phylogenetic tree roots lie based on where changes occurred over evolutionary time. Stechmann and Cavalier-Smith's work with eukaryotes is just one example of using derived traits to determine common ancestry and build phylogenetic trees to hypothesize about the evolution of a variety of taxa. ==See also==
